Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger has been fielding a lot of questions about his upcoming Terminator film during a promotional tour for his his new movie “Killing Gunther”. And this time, when speaking with Business Insider, Arnold revealed hints not only about his T-800 Model 101’s backstory in Terminator 6, but implied no other characters are returning other than possibly the T-800 and Sarah Connor. Plus T6 will exist in a brand new timeline! So does this really mean there is no John Connor in “Terminator 6”?
Read on, as we dissect Arnold Schwarzenegger’s comments:
Why Arnold loves playing a Terminator:
ARNOLD: “I love the character. I think the T-800 model is a really interesting character that was developed with a tremendous ability. He’s a machine, can be destructive, can do things human being can’t do, but at the same time when newer technology comes along the character suddenly is vulnerable and that makes him even more interesting. That’s why it plays well in the past movies.”
On what Arnold’s T-800 role will be like in “Terminator 6”:
ARNOLD: “I think Cameron and Tim came up with a concept where they can continue on with the T-800, but make the movie a whole new movie. I think the character was stuck in the future and was more like an ordinary guy who suddenly gets activated again.”
So it seems Arnold’s T-800 is “ordinary guy” living an ordinary life we guess, but “gets activated again” with maybe new mission parameters? That sounds different!
Arnold gauges the success of his non-Cameron Terminator films:
ARNOLD: “Remember, all movies, except the one when I was governor so I wasn’t in it, “Terminator” 3 and 5 made over $400 million worldwide, so those are huge grosses. We wish we had made $700 million or $800 million”
Arnold on the key to making “Terminator 6” successful:
ARNOLD: “But I think the key thing now is not to get stuck with the same timeline.”
The key thing now is “not to get stuck with the same timeline”? So T6 exists in a brand new timeline perhaps? Interesting!
ARNOLD: “I think what they are doing now with this one is basically to just take a few very basic characters, like Linda Hamilton’s character and my character, and dismiss everything else. Just move away from all these rules of the timeline and the other characters.”
Dismiss everything else? That sounds like there will be no John Connor, no Kyle Reese, no Dr. Silberman, T-1000 or any other established characters. Intriguing if true!
ARNOLD: “It’s hard to come up with new ideas when you stay within that framework. And I think this time they are going to take the freedom of opening up and not tying themselves down to the timelines and the other characters.”
Well there you go Terminator fans. It seems according to Arnold Schwarzenegger at least, we should be prepared to expect something really different in “Terminator 6”.
We’ll be back.
